Sprouting Help & Advice

Sprouting is one of the simplest and most rewarding things you can do in your kitchen. In just a few days you can grow a jar full of nutritious, living food — no soil, no garden, no special equipment needed. Here’s how to get started!

🌿 Getting started with sprouting

The basic process is beautifully simple:

  • Rinse your seeds and soak them in cold water for 8–12 hours.
  • Drain and rinse, then place in a jar covered with a breathable lid (a piece of muslin or mesh works perfectly).
  • Tilt the jar at an angle so any excess water can drain away — this is important to prevent mould.
  • Rinse and drain twice a day — morning and evening is ideal.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight in a warm spot (18–22°C is ideal).
  • Most sprouts are ready to eat in 3–5 days.

🌱 Which seeds can I sprout?

There’s a huge variety to try! Popular options include:

  • Mung beans — classic beansprouts, mild and crunchy
  • Lentils — earthy and nutritious, great in salads
  • Chickpeas — hearty and satisfying
  • Broccoli seeds — tiny but packed with nutrients
  • Radish seeds — peppery and punchy
  • Fenugreek — aromatic with a slightly bitter taste

Always use seeds specifically sold for sprouting — seeds sold for growing in soil may be treated with chemicals that aren’t suitable for eating.

🧐 Troubleshooting

My sprouts smell bad or look slimy. This usually means there’s too much moisture. Make sure you’re draining thoroughly after each rinse and that air can circulate around your jar. Rinse more frequently in warm weather.

Nothing is sprouting after a few days. Check your seeds are fresh and specifically for sprouting. Old seeds or those treated for outdoor planting may not germinate. Try a longer initial soak (up to 16 hours) and make sure the spot isn’t too cold.

My sprouts are very thin and leggy. They may be getting too much light — move them somewhere with indirect light or cover loosely. A little light in the last day or two helps them green up nicely.

🍽️ Using your sprouts

Once ready, give your sprouts a final rinse, drain well and store in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 5 days. Add them to salads, sandwiches, stir fries, smoothies or just eat them straight from the jar — they’re delicious!
